With coconut oil you can prepare some effective DIY cosmetics: simple preparations to make at home, ideal for the beauty of skin and hair. With coconut oil you can prepare scrubs, creams, lotions, masks, thanks to the nourishing and emollient properties of this precious oil: all natural treatments to be prepared in a short time.

Thanks to its nourishing and emollient properties, coconut oil is one of the most versatile natural substances: it lends itself to the preparation of natural cosmetics suitable for face and body skin and is excellent for the care and beauty of hair. It is an oil obtained from coconut pulp: when you buy it in the herbalist’s shop for your preparations, make sure that it is pure, cold pressed and free of additives and synthetic fragrances, important then that it is certified organic. So you can prepare DIY cosmetics with coconut oil, suitable for daily care of the skin of the face and body, especially in case of skin that tends to crack due to cold or sun exposure, but also useful for the care and beauty of the hair.

Cosmetic properties of coconut oil

From a cosmetic point of view, coconut oil is really very precious for the beauty of our skin and hair because it is rich in vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant that helps to keep the skin hydrated and supple, preventing wrinkles, and makes the hair strong and shiny. It is also used in the treatment of skin disorders such as eczema or psoriasis, as it has an antibacterial and protective action on the skin. Coconut oil can be used as a basic ingredient for the preparation of scrubs, lotions and creams for face, hands and body, for the realization of natural makeup and even as a toothpaste.

Softening scrub for hands

The first home made cosmetic that we can make with coconut oil is a scrub. We will see two different recipes: one for the hands and the other for the body, both with a softening action and, in the case of the one for the body, also elasticising. For the hand scrub, mix 1 tablespoon of coconut oil and 30 g of honey in a bowl. In a separate bowl put 30 g of fine salt, 30 g of sugar and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice and mix. Now pour the coconut and honey oil mixture into the sugar and salt mixture and mix well. Spread a knob of scrub on dry hands, rubbing lightly and then rinse. Keep the scrub in an airtight container.

Elasticizing body scrub and lotion
To make the body scrub, mix in a bowl 1/2 glass of coconut oil, 1 glass of brown sugar, 4 tablespoons of fine salt, 3 tablespoons of almond oil, 1 tablespoon of pure vitamin E oil and 2 drops of lavender essential oil. Once all the ingredients are well mixed with a wooden spoon, apply it to the skin before showering. Store in a sterilized glass jar with a hermetic seal. If you want to use coconut oil as a body lotion, just massage a small amount onto the moist skin: it will be soft, supple and fragrant.

Soothing face cream
Coconut oil, in its creamy state, can be an excellent substitute for normal moisturizing and nourishing face creams, especially in case of irritated and delicate skin. Thanks to its antibacterial properties, coconut oil will help the skin heal more quickly, while its emollient properties will make it soft and supple.

Gentle make-up remover
With coconut oil you can also create a natural and gentle make-up remover for the face. For a quick and easy use, pour a little of it on a dampened sponge, pass it on the face gently and in a few minutes you will remove all traces of makeup. Alternatively, you can make real make-up removal discs: cut a roll of toilet paper, including the inner carton, in half and put it in a container of the same size. Now pour 1 litre of water, 2 tablespoons of coconut oil, 2 drops of tea tree essential oil into the container so that the half roll gets wet. As soon as it has absorbed all the liquid, you can use it as a make-up removal disc.

Hair lotion and mask
Coconut oil is also great for hair care. You can use it as a split-point lotion: apply a few drops to the ends of the hair and massage after drying. It will help combat dryness, making the ends shiny: ideal for those who often use hair dryers and straighteners. Alternatively, you can also use it as a lotion before shampooing to make your hair vital and shiny, especially after summer or after dyeing. Brighten your hair and apply the oil to your entire hair, wrap your head in a towel for about an hour and then do your usual shampoo.

Before shampooing you can also apply a nourishing mask made by mixing 1 tablespoon of coconut oil with 3 teaspoons of honey and 2 egg yolks. Apply to damp hair and leave to work for 30 minutes before shampooing.

Natural toothpaste
With coconut oil you can also make a natural toothpaste. The simplest recipe is to mix coconut oil and bicarbonate in equal parts, until you get a cream like toothpaste: you can keep it in a closed jar. If you want to make a purifying and refreshing toothpaste, then mix together 60 ml of coconut oil, 60 ml of white clay, 40 ml of mineral water, 2.5 ml of salt, add a little water at a time and mix. As soon as it has reached the consistency of a cream, add 10 drops of peppermint essential oil and use it as a normal toothpaste.
