If you are reading this, then I’m sure you agree that slipping your aching muscles into a hot spring is one of the best feelings in the world. Bad skin reactions however, can be one of the worst. To help, here’s our sensitive skin guide to hot springs so you can enjoy it without fear!

WHAT TO BRING?

Moisturizing Creams/Oils:I walked into my first hot spring without bringing my own moisturizer...Big Mistake, especially when you are in a dry winter climate. Some hot springs do not provide products, and even if they do, you don’t how your skin will react to it. Your skin is already prone to irritation from the hot spring, so make sure to slather yourself with oil or cream afterwards. I usually bring Dream Cream Night Moisturizer for face and Essaouira Body Serum for the rest of my body (including split ends!).

The heat and steam causes skin to be more absorbent, so right after a hot spring soak is the best time for some intense skin hydration!

Shampoo/Conditioner/Cleansers: In most hot springs, especially in Taiwan and Japan, common courtesy requires that you thoroughly cleanse your body before stepping into the communal springs. Remember to bring your own products to avoid irritation from unknown products.

TO RINSE OR NOT TO RINSE?

People with sensitive skin should wash and rinse thoroughly after a hot spring soak.

Normally, most places advise NOT to rinse off after bathing as depending on the chemical makeup of the water, rinsing after bathing in a hot spring can weaken the effects of nutrients and other elements in the water.

This is usually not recommended for sensitive skin. Of course, it also depends on how irritated your skin is and what type of spring water you bathe in. Which leads us to...

WHAT TYPE OF HOT SPRING IS BEST FOR SENSITIVE SKIN?

Sodium Bicarbonate Saline Hot Springs are alkaline in nature, usually a clear colour and probably the best for sensitive skin. Alkaline water is super hydrating and full of antioxidants. Sodium bicarbonate in particular makes skin soft and smooth while gently removing dirt, often called 'the Water of Beautiful Skin'.

Sulphur Hot Springs are the most common, especially in Japan. This is the one with the slightly rotten egg smell most people associate with onsens. It is thought to have the ability of expanding the blood vessels in the body, and strengthening hair, nails and skin. The sulphur can soften the hardened keratin of the skin, and is also beneficial for acne and spots.

*People with EXTREMELY dry or sensitive skin (especially people with photodermatosis) are advised to avoid this type of hot spring. If your doctors have advised you to avoid hot springs, please follow their instructions!

WHICH HOT SPRINGS SHOULD I AVOID?

Acidic Hot Spring (Alunite spring)’s sterilizing, antibacterial effect is touted as being good for skin, including treating chronic skin diseases. But as this water is extremely stimulating, acidic hot springs are not suitable for long baths even for the hardiest of skin types. Sensitive or delicate skin should avoid it if possible. If you do go into it, just make sure not to stay in for too long.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO SOAK?

The best time to soak in a hot spring is the morning or after physical activity as it activates blood circulation and eases aching muscles. For a relaxing soak, consider a lukewarm hot spring closer to body temperature (~ 40 Celcius).

Most people are advised to soak for 15 to 20 minutes only as they can overstimulate the heart rate. For sensitive skin, consider 10 minutes to minimize any irritations. Lukewarm springs sooth the body’s nervous system, and can be soaked in for up to 20 minutes.

Tips!
- Hydrate! Drink water during and after a hot spring soak!
- Soak a maximum of 3 times a day
- Do not soak one hour before or after meals, or when hungry

Have a wonderful time at the hot spring!
